Missy/Ink Magazine: Modded Mamas Facing Prejudice
Project type
Article
Date
April 8, 2014
A submission piece about how being an alternative looking mum affects society's judgement of your parenting, written for Missy/Ink Magazine Issue 13.
Getting married at a young age, and then pregnant with your first child soon after, is the normal progression for many cultures and religions around the world. However, in the suburbs surrounding Toronto, it could not be further from the societal norm. Unfortunately, when you add on being tattooed, pierced, having colourful hair, etc. doing things a little differently suddenly becomes doing things inappropriately and then the judgement begins. This opinion piece was an attempt to create some understanding in the alternative women's community about what they could face in the future and the steps we could take now to improve that outlook. My debut article for Missy/Ink was well-received, and many stereotypically "normal" people that I sent it to thanked me for sharing it.
The article can be found in Issue 13, the Art issue, which is unfortunately no longer available in store or online.
